How it works

India taxes income in slabs — the first band is taxed at one rate, the next band at a higher rate, and so on, so only the income within a band is taxed at that band's rate. The calculator does this for both regimes, then applies the Section 87A rebate (which can wipe out the tax below a threshold) and adds 4% health-and-education cess on top.

An example

Taxable income of ₹12,00,000. Under the FY 2025-26 new regime the 87A rebate brings the tax to roughly ₹0. Under the old regime, without deductions, the tax is about ₹1,79,400 including cess. The regime that's lower for you depends entirely on how much you can deduct.

Common questions

Old regime or new regime?

New = lower rates, almost no deductions. Old = higher rates, but you can claim 80C, HRA, home-loan interest and more. Claim a lot and the old regime can still win; claim little and the new one is usually lower. Both are shown above.

What is taxable income?

Your total income minus allowed deductions. Work out the deductions first, then enter what's left.

Is this an exact figure?

No — it applies slab rates, the 87A rebate and 4% cess. It doesn't model surcharge, capital-gains rates, or every deduction. Confirm with a CA before filing.
